Why Snap-In Selection Deserves Care
A snap-in capacitor mounts directly on a printed circuit board, so it must fit the footprint, tolerate the ripple and last as long as the product. Choosing the wrong case size, terminal layout or temperature grade costs reliability and can force a board respin. This guide walks through a repeatable method for selecting an AiSHi snap-in aluminum electrolytic capacitor.
Step 1: Fix the Voltage Class
Start with the rail the capacitor will smooth. Choose the voltage class with margin above the worst-case voltage plus any overshoot, because the capacitor must survive the peak. AiSHi snap-in parts cover 250 V and 315 V classes, and higher voltages are available in the range. Leaving margin protects against transients and reduces the electric-field stress that ages the capacitor.
Capacitance and Hold-Up
Size the capacitance for the acceptable ripple and the required hold-up time, then check that the ripple current is within the rating at the expected case temperature and frequency. A high-capacitance part such as the 1000 uF LM series provides a large capacitance in a compact can, which suits low-voltage hold-up and filtering where board space is tight.
Step 2: Match the Terminal Layout and Case Size
Snap-in capacitors use two or three terminals on a standardized spacing, and the terminal layout follows the case size. Check the terminal count and the hole spacing against your board before you commit, and confirm the case diameter and height clear the enclosure and any adjacent components. The case size also sets the thermal mass and the ripple capability, so a larger can usually handles more ripple.
Temperature Grade and Series
Choose the temperature grade and the series by the enclosure temperature and the required life. The AiSHi LM series with a 105 °C grade and a 3000-hour endurance suits a warm enclosure and a long service life, and the LT and LG series offer longer life where needed.
Step 3: Plan the Thermal Layout
Because the life depends on the core temperature, keep the ripple within the derated rating and the case cool. Space the capacitors for airflow, keep them away from the transformer and the switching devices, and verify the case temperature at worst-case load. A few degrees saved in the layout can add years to the life.
Step 4: Validate on the Bench
After selection, validate the design with the real ripple and ambient. Measure the rail ripple, the capacitor case temperature and the capacitance over time, and confirm the life estimate. Our FAE team can review the measurements and help interpret them.
Getting Help
If you send your rail voltage, capacitance, ripple and board space to our FAE team, we will propose a shortlist with ripple, life and stock status and support the design-in. BeiLuo holds mainstream AiSHi snap-in capacitors in regional stock and ships them with import declaration, certificate of origin and RoHS documents.
